"Lost in Liguria"

Casa Villatalla, your home for your visit to Liguria, is perched in the foothills of the Ligurian Alps, surrounded by olive trees growing on stone terraced hillsides. The swimming pool in the garden has magnificent mountain views of medieval hilltop towns capped with terracotta roofs.

This course will include visits to these towns to sketch or paint the castles, church towers, alleys and archways, and bridges painted by Claude Monet. Time can be spent at Villatalla turning sketches into more finished paintings, and will include ideas and short demonstrations if appropriate in acrylics, pastels or watercolours that will also be available to try out for any beginners in these mediums.

It is suggested that watercolour, pastels pens, and pencils are used on location visits (easier to carry), but feel free to bring your favourite medium. Good stout wooden field easels, chairs and boards are available at Villatalla.

Early Spring Norsey Wood

A typical day might be spent as follows:-

9.30am: depart from Villatalla after a continental breakfast for a short drive to one or other of the nearby medieval towns, e.g. Dolceacqua, Apricale or Isolabona, where we will be able to sketch or do a watercolour or pastel.

12.30 – 1.30pm: lunch - either a packed lunch, or a light lunch taken in a bar or restaurant.

Afternoon:either continue at our location or return to Villatalla. If the former, maybe a different view, learning from the morning's efforts. If the latter, painting or maybe relaxing at Villatalla, in the gardens or by the pool, where, under guidance from Trevor, those morning sketches might be persuaded to become more complete paintings.

6.00 – 6.30pm:whilst soaking in the scent of the early evening garden, a short appraisal of the day’s work, with guidance as necessary, and planning for the next day maybe with a glass of wine in hand and a nibble or two.

8pm:dinner at Villatalla, or at a local restaurant.

During the week there will also be trips to the beautiful Riviera town of Bordighera, and the famous Hanbury Botanical Gardens. So we have a choice of painting topics, mountains, villages, towns, rivers, trees, gardens and the sea – something for everyone.

NB All daily excursions are included in the cost of your holiday.

A detailed materials list will be sent out to students 6 weeks prior to the start of the course if required .

Trevor Harwood

As a self-taught artist, I have painted since childhood exploring drawing, watercolour and oil painting. I discovered pastels later and this particular media lit a fire in me I had never experienced bringing a real urgency and vitality to my painting releasing an energy I did not know I had.

I enjoy several approaches to my art depending on my mood. From a traditional style, to a semi-abstract “fragmented” style, maybe some impressionist views and even towards abstract styles. I believe art and all its forms should be fun and try to instil an essence of this into all my tutoring.

I undertake commissions and run painting holidays overseas and residential workshops here in the UK. I also teach workshops for all ages from my purpose-built studio, give demonstrations, workshops and talks and teach local art groups on a variety of topics and in any media although I still favour pastels at present.
