Landscapes in Liguria - Course Description

Tuition by Carole Massey, celebrated professional artist and popular tutor, for painters of all abilities.

Tuesday 27 May - Tuesday 3 June 2008

Tuesday 30 September - Tuesday 7 October 2008

"Landscapes in Liguria"

This course is based on sketching and painting this beautiful region, using watercolour, pen and wash and water soluble pencils. It is aimed at all abilities allowing each pupil to develop and flourish at their own pace under Carole’s expert guidance. Using both demonstrations and individual tuition, Carole will help you to improve your artistic skills and techniques whilst enjoying the convivial atmosphere of Villatalla and Liguria.

As well as capturing views of some delightful old towns, spectacular "perched" villages and the dramatic surrounding countryside we will also consider the basics of colour theory, tonal values, composition, perspective and much more. At the end of each day there will be a group appraisal to assess progress or deal with any problems.

Perinaldo

A typical day might be spent as follows:-

9.30am: depart from Villatalla for a short minibus drive to (e.g.) the nearby medieval villages of Dolceacqua, Isolabona or Apricale. Carole will show you the best vantage points and after some "warm-up" sketches, we will start a drawing or painting.

12.30 – 1.30pm: lunch in a café/bar or restaurant, or buy a light snack for a picnic. Continue painting, or, depending on the location, choose to do some sightseeing or shopping.

4pm: return to Villatalla to relax by the pool or on your balcony, or spend time sketching from the gardens.

Ventimiglia Alta

6.30 – 7pm: a short appraisal of the day’s work, and briefing for the following day, before dinner at Villatalla or a local restaurant. On Saturday night, dinner at a nearby restaurant will be followed by music and dancing (dancing not compulsory!)

There will also be trips to the beautiful Riviera town of Bordighera, and the famous Hanbury Botanical Gardens on the French border.

A detailed itinerary and materials list will be sent out to students 8 weeks prior to the start of the course. The itinerary may change according to the requirements of the group.
