Painting and Drawing in Liguria

Villatalla and its beautiful surroundings offer wonderful opportunities for drawing and painting. The gardens and the far-reaching views make a great starting point to the week of painting.
The aim of the course is to introduce students to an effective working formula via the understanding of composition, colour, tonal balance and the use of materials which will lead to personal interpretations of landscape, buildings, etc, and for those who wish to, through the use of mixed media and other methods and exploring various ideas. Thus making a personal response to what has been seen.
We will look at the diversity of noted artists’ interpretation of the Mediterranean area, for example Cezanne, Monet etc. A photographic record of work in progress, and places visited, will be made and put on a CD which will be available at the end of the week.
During the week we will visit nearby medieval towns, e.g. Dolceacqua, Apricale, Rocchetta Nervina or Isolabona, and make a visit to the studio of Pompeo Mariani, a friend of Monet’s, in Bordighera. We will also paint and walk locally which will take us through vineyards and, hopefully, take in a wine tasting!
The emphasis will be on individual needs and development.
A typical day might be spent as follows:-
9.30am-ish: leave Villatalla for a short drive to one or other of the nearby medieval towns, e.g. Dolceacqua, Apricale, Rocchetta or Isolabona, where we will be able to sketch or paint.
After a local lunch we will return to Villatalla to develop the morning’s work with guidance from Amanda and/or relax in the gardens and pool. In the evening we will gather before dinner for an appraisal of the day’s work and planning and teaching points for the next day.

I am a landscape painter. My work is exhibited in galleries in the UK. I have shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, Royal West of England Academy and the Mall Galleries etc. I have worked for many years as a teacher, specializing in art, teaching children and adults, working in schools, colleges and residential workshops.
